About the Startup

Describe your product in 3 words.

Play equals experience.

How did you come up with the idea for this product?

Childhood is an amazing time to learn and build skills, inspire ideas, and let imagination run wild. We recognize that kids want play to be a ‘real’ experience with ‘real’ materials, so we design products based on open-ended, creative play using high-quality materials that offer kids the experience of both making and playing.

What makes your product special?

Seedling products are designed to put children in control of their experiences, and encourage them to create their own adventures in playtime. We want the children to create what they imagine, not what we tell them to make.

What has been the best part of your startup experience?

The best part of building and growing Seedling is the people who’ve chosen to take this journey together. It takes a dedicated team to choose the path less-traveled, and there’s great level of admiration and respect among our team members. It’s amazing to look back and see where we've been and what we’ve built, and even more amazing to look ahead at where we’re going—together.

    Fun & challenging game
This is a super fun game. If you liked putting Legos together as a child, then you'll love this game. It takes some thought & time putting it together. Once the maze is finished, then it provides hours of fun! You can make it as challenging or simple as you want it to be. I'd definitely say this game is for ages 10+...and specifically for people who enjoy putting things together in an intricate fashion that takes a bit of time to set up. This is why I'd give it a 4/4.5 stars. My family and I enjoy playing it!

I really enjoyed using the maze! The dual experience of physically playing the wooden maze and then being able to upload it to the app was outstanding. The VR experience was very enjoyable although I did feel a little dizzy afterwards.
Only real downside was reading the instructions. They felt very limited and also a bit confusing. We ended up creating our own steps to build our maze instead of their suggested ones--this seemed to work far better.
All in all, truly great product.

Of all the gifts I bought this year, I had the highest hopes for this one and it let me down the hardest. I spent $60 on this and regret every single penny. My 11 year old wanted something virtual reality for Christmas as after watching the video for this, it seemed like a really fun VR gift. But the construction of this is so cheap! The wood blocks used to make the maze just sit on top and slide around so when you actually try to play, the heavy marbles move the walls. The cardboard viewer is chintzy, and we couldn't get the mazes to upload to the app even after we tried for an hour. This whole thing was completely worthless. I hate giving 1 star reviews but this was just such a huge disappointment.

Given the high reviews, I bought several of these as Christmas presents. I was disappointed.

    UPDATE:
I received an email back from customer service. You cannot do multiplayer with Android at this time. I sent a screenshot, and they are looking into the problems I had with the camera. I also had a chance to use the product on an iPhone. It is MUCH easier to use. If I had known this, I would not have bought these for Android users. If you have an iPhone, the app is fantastic and does not have any of the problems mentioned below.
    ---------

The following feedback is based on the Android app:
    - First, the app does not recognize the maze as it was created on the board. I changed the lighting, different distances, and other variables, but it was not even close to accurate. I had to spend a lot of time manually editing the map with my phone, which brings me to the second point.
    - The app is not user friendly. It was hard to find the icons to add start and stop flags. The process for editing is slow and tedious. When using two fingers to move the map, it inadvertently adds walls and other things when you touch it.
    - Navigating through the maze has been difficult for the kids (over 8 yrs old). When you press the button to stop, it keeps going for a bit as it slows to a stop. You have to wait until it is fully stopped, turn and start again or you will find yourself moving sideways. It takes some getting used to. It should be programmed to just stop immediately instead of gradually.
    - The instructions state that when you first open the app, you can choose 'Play with Friends'. This option has not shown up for me when I start the app, so we have not been able to play together. I am going to try to uninstall and reinstall the app and see what happens.

A couple of other notes that are not complaints, just fyi:
    - It only works with google cardboard based viewers. My brother has a tzumi dream vision, and because of its button interface it can only move one square at a time through the maze.
    - The cardboard base is perforated so you can set your own holes for traps. This makes the toy useless with a marble because it does not roll smoothly. It gets stuck in the perforation of every other square, so the kids don't want to use this on a tabletop. I understand this is not the gimmick of the toy, but it is something that I missed when I bought them.
    - Extra viewers and building refill kits are inexpensive and reasonably priced, so that was good.

That being said, playing the game is fun, once you spend some time getting it programmed and set up properly. If the navigation were easier and it worked with other vr viewers, I could overlook the other downsides.

Overall, I'm just not sure I could positively recommend this to a friend.

We were very excited to order this. It pressed a lot of the right buttons for us. But the product needs more work before market.

Specifically the problems we had were
    - Playing as just a normal marble maze game (no VR) does not work well. The ball frequently gets caught on the perforations in the paper, forcing you to use your finger to get it going again.
    - Setting up a maze of a pain. Adding double sided tape to the back of each block and then to the board takes time. Maybe this is what you want if you want to keep your kids occupied for a while. I kind of assumed that the blocks had magnets in them and that it would be trivial to stick to a board. Guess that was hopeful thinking.
    - The iphone app never capture my maze. We had good lighting (tried many different lights and many different times). The maze it scanned kind of resembled the one we built - but had lots of missing walls and new walls here and there. It never once got the placement of the start and finish tags - and I don't think it caught most of the traps either.
    - Ours did not come with VR goggles. I feel a little jipped as this was the reason we wanted it - and I see it displayed on amazon page.
    - We happened to have another google cardboard VR goggle setup - but it would not work with this game since there was no button on the goggles and therefor no way to move.

So ultimately the physical unit is pretty useless AFAIK, and the app is completely useless. I am very technical, and play with lots of new toys all the time. I don't have the patience to make this work.

I hate to write a sour review, but I think this product was pushed to market way too soon.
